The late Manna Dey(1919−2013)

This is me; Rudro Dipta, want to share about a musical maestro in bengal. The journey, the evolution, the compositions and so on.
Several bengali legends like Rabindranath Tagore, Shalil Chowdhury, Manna Dey, Subir Sen, Hemanta Mukharjee and so many legends that enlightened our musical experience. Focusing on legend Manna Dey, his incomparable composition and lyrics, served as a pioneer of out of the box era in late 50's. The songs like Coffee house er sei adda at, Jodi kagoje likho nam, Khub Dante iche kore, Sobai to sukhi hote chay, Ke Tumi Tandraharini and so many melodious creation fabricated in our thinking, our daily work and subsequently our life. Dey was honored with the Padma shree in 1971, followed by the Padma Bhusan in 2005 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2007 for his outstanding contribution in music.
Prabodh Chandra Dey , known by his stage name Manna Dey, Born during British period in Bengal presidency May 1, 1919. He received his early education at Indu Babur Pathshala, a small pre-primary school. He started doing stage shows in school from 1929. He attended Scottish Church Collegiate School and Scottish Church College.Dey began taking music lessons from Krishna Chandra Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan. During this period of learning, he attained Top position for three consecutive years in three different categories of inter-collegiate singing competitions.

Later his musical guru Krishna Chandra Dey turned Dey's insights and sparked his musical career in the film industry through the mighty creation of Sisir Bhaduri's Chanakya. But he didn't make his vocal debut in this inception.
He executed it in the film Tamanna(1942) by Phoni Mazumder under the tuning of K.C Dey as well as the director. The symphony named Jago Aayee Usha Ponchi Boley Jago and that's hit the market.
Then he concentrate his mind on flourishing his voice through playback singing in bollywood movies.He collaborated with the great musician Sachin Dev Burman ,sang Upar Gagan Vishal for the film Mashal in 1950. By 1952, he had established his name as one of the top playback singers. Benaglees then came to know about Dey, the versatile voice of bengal.
Manna Dey contributed so many bengali movie playback like Baro Eka Lage (Chowrongee,1968), Kaharba Noy Dadra Bajao(Mouchak,1974), Ami Je Jalsaghare (Antony Phiringee, 1967), Ami Sukhee kata Sukhee(Dui Purush,1978) and so forth. In these films, Dey introduced us to the combination of modern music and the classical genre.
Dey won national awards for Best Male Playback Singer for the Bengali film Nishi Padma.
Dey collaborated with so many legends and famed in such a way that the whole country get to know him. Kishore-Dey(Kishore for the great Kishore Kumar) duo is one of them.The demand for Kishore-Dey combination desperately grew after 1972.
Their popular songs were Mere Pyale Mein(Aamir Garib 1974), Is Ishq Mein Har (Mr. Romeo 1974), Yeh Dosti (Sholay,1975), Phool Chaahiye (Na Pyas,1982) and their last duet was in 1986 film Maqqar – Tu Hi Mera Sapna.
Also the trio of Kishore-Rafi-Dey sang together hits like Tujh me Ishwar, Allah Tujh me(Nanha Farishta,1969) and Band Mutthee (Chalti Ka Naam Zindagi,1981).
Lata and Dey recorded several fusion songs, which used both Indian and western mellifluous instruments like violin, guitar, piano, harmonium, tabla and so on. Several such songs included the duets Kaanhaa Bole Naa and Balma Moraa Aanchaar for the film Sangat(1976) composed by Salil Chowdhury in 1975, which became very popular . The song Neela peela hara gulabi is a famous Holi song sung by Lata with Dey in (Aap Bete ,1976). In 1974, Dey sang along with Lata-Kishore in the song Goyakechu Nanche (Manoranjan,1974) which became a chartbuster in 1974.
Dey continued to have hit Hindi songs to his credit from 1971 to 1986, such as Dulhan Banungi (Who Jo Hasina,1983), composed by Raamlaxman and sung with Lata, Aankhon Ka Salaam Lo with Lata-Rafi in (Samraat,1982), Dilwaale Dilwaale (Kranti,1981), Yaari Hai Imaan (Zanjeer,1973) ,Ye Duniya Hey Usi Ko sung with Kishore-Usha (Suraksha,1979), Tum Besahara Ho To Kisi from (Anurodh,1977), Jo Likha Gaya Hai(Umar Qaid,1975) among others.
The last duet Lata-Dey sang for a Hindi movie was Sab Kho Diya Sab Pa Liya (Maqqar, 1986), composed by Rajesh Roshan and went on to become a chartbuster. From the late 1970s until 1990, he collaborated extensively on Hindi film scores with composers such as Laxmikant Pyarelal, Kamlyanji Anadji, Pancham, Bappi Lahiri, Raam Laxman, Sonik Omi, S. Rajeswar Rao, Ravi, and Rajesh Roshan.
The legend won national awards for Best Male Playback Singer Bollywood cinema Mera Naam Joker.
Dey was hospitalized in the first week of October 2013 because of his pre-health issue that took him to intensive care unit . He died of a cardiac arrest at 3:45 pm on 24 October at Narayana Hrudayalaya hospital in Bengaluru, aged 94.He was cremated in Bangalore itself.
